Long ago, in a
faraway Kingdom, lived a delicate and dainty princess
who just wanted to get good nights sleep.
Once Upon a Mattress, is a classic retelling of Hans
Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea.” In the
faraway land, a long long time ago, there was a silent
King Sextimus, a boisterous Queen Agravain and a Momma’s
boy, Prince Dauntless the Drab. Momma will only let her
little boy marry a Princess of true royal blood. So she
devises tests of all sorts to prove that each and every
princess isn’t royal enough to wed her precious
Dauntless. Queen Agravain commands that no other may
wed until the time Dauntless takes his bride.
Sir Harry strikes out to find a royal princess for
Dauntless so he in turn can marry the lovely Lady
Larkin. Harry returns with “Fred,” Princess Winifred of
the Woebegon. She will endure a moat, an all night
dance-a-thon, and a sleepless night on a bed of 20
mattresses. Will she be able to pass the test?
